Montrose is a part of Amazon's wider Colorado plans, which include Grand Junction and Gypsum also

Amazon’s rapid expansion across Colorado is bringing new jobs, new facilities and a sharpened focus on rural communities, and Montrose is among the company’s latest investments.

The e-commerce giant announced in September a series of new delivery stations and logistics facilities designed to strengthen its network across the Rocky Mountain region. The expansion includes recently opened stations in Gypsum, Grand Junction and Logan County, with additional facilities planned in Colorado Springs, Arapahoe County, Aurora and Loveland. Each new site represents part of Amazon’s strategy to speed delivery times while embedding itself deeper into local economies.

Montrose, where a $25 million delivery station is currently under construction, has become a key piece of that plan. The facility is expected to open by the end of 2025, bringing more than 50 full- and part-time jobs with benefits.

Statewide expansion

Amazon officials said the statewide effort will create thousands of jobs in total, both within the company and through contract opportunities for delivery drivers and service partners. In addition to hiring at its new facilities, the company has pledged $100,000 in contributions to youth STEM education nonprofits across Colorado. Recipients include Colorado Mountain College Foundation, Mountain Board of Cooperative Education Services, PEER Kindness, Totally Kids, Hope House and Junior Achievement-Rocky Mountain.

“Colorado is the best place to live, work, play and do business,” Gov. Jared Polis said in welcoming the announcement. “Amazon’s expanded operations into rural Colorado will support rural job creation, connect our mountain communities, and bolster economic growth in the region. I am grateful Colorado is being recognized for our strong business climate and talent to attract large business operations across our state.”

Sam Bailey, Amazon’s senior manager of economic development in Colorado, said the openings show the company’s long-term commitment to the state. “This investment reflects our long-term commitment to Colorado’s economic future, bringing competitive-wage jobs while strengthening our delivery network for customers across the Rocky Mountain region,” he said.

Since 2010, Amazon has created more than 20,000 jobs in Colorado and invested more than $15 billion across the state, including infrastructure and compensation to employees. The company estimates its presence has contributed another $15 billion to the economy, supporting an additional 29,600 indirect jobs in construction, logistics and professional services.

Montrose impact

For Montrose leaders, the new delivery station represents more than a logistics hub. The facility is expected to serve as a Western Slope anchor for Amazon’s last-mile delivery, processing packages arriving from fulfillment centers and sending them out for final delivery.

Sandy Head, executive director of the Montrose Economic Development Corporation, called the project a “game-changer” for the region.

“With a $25 million investment, Amazon’s presence will not only improve delivery times and customer service but will also create high-quality jobs with benefits for our residents,” Head said. “As the service hub for the region, Montrose continues to be a strategic location for businesses looking to grow and serve a wider market. We’re excited to see how Amazon’s investment enhances our local economy and strengthens Montrose’s position as a leading destination for business and innovation.”

Montrose is strategically located as a gateway to mountain communities and the Four Corners region. The city has positioned itself in recent years as a hub for both regional healthcare and commerce, making it attractive to companies looking to serve a wider swath of western Colorado.

The Montrose Business Times previously reported that the delivery station is on track for a year-end 2025 opening. Once operational, the facility will join Amazon’s network of delivery stations — the last link in the company’s supply chain before packages reach customers’ doorsteps.

Local jobs and small business opportunities

Beyond direct employment, the Montrose station is expected to create opportunities for independent contractors and entrepreneurs through Amazon Flex and the Delivery Service Partner program. These programs allow local drivers to operate independently or run small delivery businesses under Amazon’s umbrella.

Delivery stations like Montrose’s are designed to provide flexible work opportunities while ensuring faster and more reliable shipping. The model has allowed Amazon to expand into smaller and more rural markets where traditional large fulfillment centers might not make sense.

For Montrose residents, that means quicker delivery times and access to the same services available in larger metro areas. For the broader Western Slope, it represents a significant infrastructure investment in logistics, positioning the region as a more attractive location for other industries.

Amazon’s Colorado expansion underscores its strategy of investing in both metro and rural communities. The Gypsum delivery station opened in August, with a ribbon-cutting scheduled in October, while facilities in Colorado Springs and Arapahoe County are slated to launch later this fall. Longer-term projects, including an Aurora cross-dock site and a robotics fulfillment center in Loveland, are scheduled for 2026.

Company leaders say the statewide network will improve efficiency while deepening Amazon’s role as a major Colorado employer.

“The opening of these facilities will continue to support faster delivery and better services for customers in Colorado,” Bailey said. “This facility represents more than just a building — it’s a partnership with Colorado communities that will create opportunity for years to come.”
