Volunteers Of America opens new affordable senior housing community called Rendezvous

Volunteers of America National Services (VOANS), in partnership with Volunteers of America Colorado, cut the ribbon last week on Rendezvous, a $23 million affordable senior housing community on Robin’s Way in Montrose.

The Sept. 24 grand opening celebrated the completion of a project that combined the renovation of the former 30-unit Pavilion Gardens, built in 2000, with 22 newly constructed apartments on adjacent land. In total, the development now provides 52 permanently affordable homes for older adults.

The apartments are reserved for residents age 55 and older with incomes between 30% and 60% of the area median income, roughly $21,000 to $49,000. Organizers said the project was designed not only to provide housing but also access to healthcare and community resources, reflecting VOANS’ approach to “service-enriched” housing.

Features at Rendezvous include gathering spaces, gardens, and modern amenities such as in-unit washers and dryers, private patios or balconies, and updated kitchens. On-site management and resident services are provided by Volunteers of America Colorado.

“Our priority remains providing older adults in Colorado with affordable housing that offers both comfort and quality,” said Dee Dee Beaty, senior vice president of housing at Volunteers of America National Services. “Rendezvous demonstrates how thoughtful housing can strengthen health and well-being while also easing the financial pressures of rising housing costs.”

“Affordable housing shouldn’t feel out of reach for older adults who have given so much to our communities,” said Dave Schunk, president and CEO of VOA Colorado. “Rendezvous provides not just a roof, but a home, a place filled with dignity, stability, and the kind of connection that makes life meaningful.”

Doug Snyder, vice president of regional real estate development for VOANS, added: “The opening of Rendezvous is the result of years of collaboration, planning, and commitment to addressing the growing need for affordable senior housing in Montrose. This community not only provides high-quality, affordable homes but also creates a place where older adults can feel supported, connected, and valued. We are proud to see this vision come to life in Montrose.”

The project was funded through state and federal tax credits from the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, U.S. Bank, and the Colorado Division of Housing, along with support from the City of Montrose and community partners. FCI Constructors served as general contractor, Shopworks Architecture designed the project, and Mandil Inc. and Group 14 Engineering contributed to the development team.

VOANS operates more than 240 affordable housing properties nationwide, while VOA Colorado runs over 50 human service programs across the state. Rendezvous is their newest collaboration in western Colorado.
