Typhoon Farma is opening its gates to the community next weekend with a hands-on hemp event designed to educate, demystify, and let visitors take home part of the crop themselves.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Montrose-based hemp company will host its “Pick Your Own” event at 16250 6100 Road, located behind Oak Grove Elementary School. The event will feature free food and refreshments, educational tours of the fields, and the chance for customers to harvest their own CBD hemp plants.
Breaking the Stigma
For CEO Ryan Eakes, the event is about more than showing off a successful crop. It’s about helping people see hemp for what it is — a plant with real wellness potential that is often misunderstood.
“There’s a stigma with the plant, and we’re trying to demystify it,” Eakes said. “People think it’s just going to get you high, but these plants don’t do that. They have the same benefits as marijuana without the THC.”
Eakes emphasized that Typhoon Farma grows floral hemp varieties that are low in THC, meaning they cannot produce a psychoactive effect. Instead, the plants are cultivated for cannabidiol (CBD), a compound many consumers turn to for health and wellness uses.
Learning in the Field
Attendees will be able to walk the fields, see how the crop is grown, and learn directly from Typhoon Farma’s team about planting, nutrients, harvesting, and how the hemp is ultimately used.
Visitors who choose to purchase a plant can also take home instructions on how to cure it, extract oils, and even grow their own. Colorado law allows adults to cultivate up to six cannabis plants at home, and Eakes said his team is eager to share advice for those interested in trying it on a small scale.
“We show people how we plant, how we grow, and what kind of nutrients we use,” Eakes said. “If somebody wants to try growing at home, we can give them some advice. It’s really specialized, and people appreciate learning from us.”
The event comes just ahead of Typhoon Farma’s full-scale harvest, which is slated to begin the following week. By opening the field to the public first, the company hopes to let visitors see the crop at its best.
“We’re going to let people come and pick the best of the field before we start harvesting,” Eakes said. “We’re excited about the crop this year, and we’re already looking forward to next year.”
Typhoon Farma’s Growth
The Pick Your Own event caps a season of momentum for Typhoon Farma. Earlier this year, the company doubled its floral hemp farming footprint, part of a broader strategy to scale production and strengthen its role in the CBD market. The expansion followed a challenging period for the hemp industry, which faced steep price drops and oversupply in recent years.
By leaning into direct-to-consumer education and specialty floral hemp, Typhoon Farma is betting on renewed interest in CBD products and the value of transparency. The company has made public engagement a key part of its strategy, working to connect with Montrose residents and normalize hemp as a legitimate agricultural and wellness crop.
“We’re really focused on helping people understand what this plant can do,” Eakes said. “For us, this is about building trust, educating the public, and being part of the community.”
The farm event is free to attend, and organizers expect a steady flow of visitors curious about hemp’s uses and applications. For many, it will be a first chance to see the plant up close and learn about its life cycle from seed to finished product.
Whether attendees come for the education, the chance to pick a plant, or just the food and conversation, Eakes said the bigger goal is to open doors.
“This plant has a lot to offer,” he said. “If people walk away understanding that hemp isn’t about getting high — that it’s about health, wellness, and responsible farming — then we’ve done our job.”
