Sinaloa Grill welcomed to downtown with DART’s first Spanish-language ribbon cutting

Sinaloa Grill has joined the ranks of the many new businesses finding a home in downtown Montrose, bringing a fresh take to Mexican food in the area. On Monday, Dec. 18, they held their ribbon cutting, in conjunction with the City of Montrose’s Development and Revitalization Team (DART).

Present at the ceremony were numerous City officials, such as City Councilor Dave Frank, City Manager Bill Bell, Deputy City Manager Ann Morgenthaler, Deputy City Clerk Briceida Ortega, and DART Coordinator Michelle Wingfield.

Owners Ramiro Ruelas, of southern Sonora, Mexico, and Oneyda Palma, from Sinaloa, Mexico, have been thinking of opening a restaurant since moving to Montrose in 2017, and Ramiro worked in Mexican restaurants for seven years prior, gaining valuable experience.

“After seven years of working in Mexican Restaurants, we finally decided to open up our own. We wanted to bring a different concept of Mexican food to the City of Montrose,” Ruelas said.

What is this different concept Mr. Ruelas is referencing? Well, Sinaloa Grill’s food comes from a different region of Mexico from most restaurants in Montrose.

“The food is from northern Mexico, and the restaurants that are here already are from either mid Mexico or southern.”
“In Sonora and Sinaloa specifically, the dishes that are unique are seafood from Sinaloa, and the traditional Carne Asada, which is steak, from Sonora,” Ruelas said of some of the highlights of their menu.

They also do Sonora dogs — a hotdog with plenty of toppings — as well as some fusion: Mexican-inspired sushi.

Those seven years of restaurant experience influenced many aspects of running the business. Ramiro listed several.
“The first strategy is customer service, preparing the best Mexican dishes, and the cleanliness in the restaurant is very important.”

Ramiro has big hopes for the future of Sinaloa Grill.
“We want to establish ourselves and maintain ourselves as one of the top Mexican restaurants in the City of Montrose. We’d like to be here for many years and offer the best Mexican food, and be able to leave a legacy.”

For the owners, this venture is about much more than just the business side of things. “We started, not wanting to make profit the main thing, it is not all monetary. (We were not) just thinking about the money, when we opened the business. We were thinking more of being able to achieve something here in the United States, and something that I couldn’t do in Mexico, I’m able to do here.

And having the opportunity to do so is what (makes me) so appreciative.
